The University of Kansas alumni, Richard and Elizabeth Hoover, have enabled Drs. Alan M. Allgeier and Mark B. Shiflett to establish the Applied Chemical Engineering Research Laboratory. With their $1 million donation, they seek to help students extend academic concepts to applied engineering in an effort to better prepare them for an industrial career. Their generosity facilitates long-term programs and acquisition of specialized equipment that give KU students marketable, industry-relevant skills. Richard and Elizabeth have a special interest in augmenting undergraduate education, which is synergistic to the goals of the Allgeier and Shiflett Research Groups. Dr. Allgeier leverages his two decades of industrial experience to define exciting student research programs spanning pharmaceutical manufacture, biorenewable products and materials characterization.  Undergraduate students play a pivotal role in the development and growth of both the Allgeier and Shiflett Research Groups, from contributing to the design and construction of laboratory equipment to participating in industry-sponsored research and even launching new research projects, independently.  With enthusiasm and the generous gift of The Hoovers, we are building something special at KU!
